For those of you watching the Olympics, you know how amazing this year is for Michael Phelps. He has won five gold medals, set five world records, and still has three more events to go. This is amazing in the swimming world. I think it’s even impressive to those who have no interest in swimming. He is an exceptionally talented swimmer across a variety of strokes. As a former swimmer, I’m in awe every time I see him. He is not just beating world records, he is shattering them.
It has been rumored that Mark Spitz (currently holding the record for most gold medals in a single Olympics) is upset about Michael Phelps’ recent success and how close he is to beating this record. Mark Spitz won 7 gold medals in the 1972 Munich Olympics. It has been 36 years and I have a feeling that he feels alright about passing the reigns down to MP. After all, to hold a record for 36 years is impressive in itself.
I’m hoping he wins his next three events. If nothing else, they should be good races to watch.
